SELF AND THE STRUCTURE (Allied Studies)

In this module we looked upon organizing and managing ourselves which was something quite less related to architectural studies but helps in growing efficiency in work among oneself. This also brings discipline to self and creates more opportunities for one.

While studying about organization we read a lot of books and also saw some movies on the same. As an activity, we closely observed different organizations and how they work.

I chose the practice of Ganesh murti makers as it was something that rises during this period. We went to some of the outlets and linked them back to the bigger organizations supporting these small practices. While interviewing the people working in the bigger organization named Shri Sai Arts, we found a diverse collection of people who migrate from villages in Bihar and nearby places while some are from Mumbai itself. Since this whole practice is not carried out throughout the year, there are some other practices they do during the off periods like farming and painting etc. Also we got to know that some work there out of interest and they have a regular office job but they take a leave for these 3 months to participate in these practices. The other people migrate to Mumbai for only 3 months(June, July, August) and for the rest of the year they do works apart from this. The making of a single Ganesh murti is divided into several parts from stencil base to layering to burning of husk to painting in monotone shades to adding colors to jewellery detailing to gold painting and ending towards the eye detailing. The murtis made here are retailed at this outlet and the rest of them are sold to different shops near the footpaths for wholesale rates.

Further we looked upon the strategies that can be proposed keeping in mind the emotions and problems faced by these workers and helped towards the work being carried out efficiently.

I thought that inclusion of these workers in the festivity will not only bring joy to them but also help in distributing the burden from a smaller group of people to these large number of working people.

The aim of the strategy was to make these festivals more inclusive for the parties that are kept at the periphery, by involving them in events like pujas, bhajans, games which take place during the event. Thus allowing each person to be an equal part of the festivities.
